“First, I’m beamed with smiles today as I see the smiling faces of workers including our retirees and as we all know, the government cannot function without workers.
On this auspicious day, we have all congregated to acknowledge the dedication, sacrifice, and diligence of our workers as architects and champions of our collective prosperity.
Monthly, we are doing 200million Naira for pensions and gratuities, this month we have added an additional 200million Naira. So, for this month, 400million Naira will be made available for the payment of pensions and gratuities.
We can build all the roads and hospitals, if the people are not happy, the roads and hospitals will be there and nobody will use them, and your government is prepared to ensure that you have smiles added on your faces every day.
In agreement with your leaders the NLC and the TUC, because you are very happy marching and dancing, we have the first three winners, and the overall winners of the March Past, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria will be going home with the sum of 2million Naira. The 2nd and 3rd prize winners, National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, and National Union of Pensioners, will be going home with 1.5million naira, and 1million naira respectively.”
~Sen. Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, speaking during this year’s Workers’ Day Celebration, held at Peace Park, Yenagoa.
