The Bayelsa Education Development Trust Fund (EDTF), in collaboration with the Teachers Training Registration and Certificate Board (TTRCB) and the British Council, has launched a five-day intensive English programme and school leadership capacity-building training to strengthen the education sector in Bayelsa State.

The training, hosted at the Bayelsa State Medical University, Yenagoa, is aimed at equipping educators and school administrators with advanced teaching methodologies and effective management practices. By focusing on improving classroom instruction and leadership skills, the programme seeks to enhance learning outcomes and the overall quality of education across the state.

Speaking at the opening session, the Executive Secretary of EDTF, Dr. Mrs. Alice Atuwo emphasized the importance of the initiative in shaping the future of education in Bayelsa. She highlighted the need for continuous professional development, stating that “quality education begins with well-trained teachers and effective school leadership. This programme is a crucial step in ensuring our educators are equipped with the necessary skills to deliver excellence in our classrooms.”

Also speaking, the Chairman of TTRCB, High Chief Dr. Mrs. Stella Ugolo, underscored the role of the training in fostering innovation and accountability in school management. She noted that “education is the bedrock of any society, and as a board, we are committed to ensuring that teachers and administrators not only meet but exceed the required standards. This training is a testament to our dedication to professionalism and continuous improvement in the teaching profession.”

Representing the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Barr. Monday Eke, Director of the Exams and Records Department, Ministry of Education, Bayelsa State, commended the collaboration between EDTF, TTRCB, and the British Council. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance teacher training and school leadership. “The Ministry of Education remains steadfast in its goal of strengthening the education sector. This training aligns with our vision of equipping educators with the necessary skills to drive meaningful change in our schools,” he stated.

The event was well attended by education stakeholders from across the state and beyond, including school proprietors, principals, teachers, policy makers, and representatives from educational institutions. Many participants expressed optimism about the impact of the training, noting that it provides valuable insights and tools that will improve their effectiveness in the classroom and in school management.

Representatives from the British Council also stressed the importance of modern teaching techniques in improving student performance and reiterated their commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance educational quality in Nigeria.

As the programme progresses, stakeholders anticipate that it will contribute significantly to bridging educational gaps and positioning Bayelsa as a hub for academic excellence.
