Sir Braveman Wodi on Monday March 17, 2025 in his office at the Sampson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa declared Bayelsa State as the new home of athletics glory in the country.

Sir Wodi, made this declaration, while receiving members of the victorious athletics team, that recently represented the State in the 3rd edition of the MTN CHAMPS/Making of Champions (MOC) Meet in Benin, Edo State.

The Director, stated that with the outcome of the said feat, it is obvious that Bayelsa State now remains the team to beat in future meets in the country.

The Director stated, that on behalf of the Sports Development Commissioner Champion Baraladei Daniel Igali, he wholeheartedly thank the Governor Senator Douye Diri and his Deputy Senator Lawrence Erhwrujakpo for the financial approval, to see that the team honoured the invitation of the organizers of this event.

Sir Braveman seized the opportunity to announce the appointment of Coach Richard Torugbene, as now the new athletics head coach in the council, following the retirement of the former head coach Pius Barizgha.

Earlier, the vice Chairman of the Bayelsa State Athletics Association (BYSAA) and leader of the delegation Dr. Kolawole Oredipe, stated that all the efforts putten to breed and groom the victorious athletes thus far is not at all a waste, with the outcome of the Benin experience.

Highlight of the occasion was the presentation of the gold trophy won by the team, through it’s captain David Michael to the Director of Sports Sir Braveman Wodi.

Some dignitaries at the occasion include Mr. Melvin Bibo HOD P.R.S.. In the State Sports Council, Mrs. Jean Ebi Robin Apreala HOD Media and Publicity of the Council, Coach Austin Odomu retired National Volleyball Coach, Coach Morris Terry more retired athletics coach of the Council, Coach Pius Barizgha retired head of athletics Coach in the Council, Mr. Douye Asingbi head of Media Committee of the Council, amongst others.

It will be recalled, that Team Bayelsa impressed at the said Championship, in Season 3 held at the Samuel Igbemudia Stadium in Benin City in Edo State held on March 13 – 15 2025, winning the overall best position with a total of 15 medals, 7 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals.
