~ as governor Diri leads delegation at REA roundtable engagement

In a significant stride toward improving power access and infrastructure, the Bayelsa State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency Senator Douye Diri, participated in the State-by-State Roundtable Engagement hosted by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) on April 8, 2025.

The event, themed on strengthening State-led energy partnerships, culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the REA and the Bayelsa State Government, marking a new chapter in the state’s quest for sustainable energy.

In an interview with newsmen, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Professor Seiyefa Brisibe, described the initiative as a landmark step toward genuine development in Bayelsa State.

He commended the depth of research undertaken by the Agency, calling it both insightful and timely, given the urgent need for intervention.

Expressing optimism, the Health Commissioner noted that the comprehensive electrification efforts would significantly impact the state’s healthcare system, ensuring that all 147 health facilities currently facing limited or no power supply would soon gain reliable access to electricity—ultimately enhancing the quality and reach of healthcare delivery across the State.

The roundtable commenced with a warm welcome address from the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, who represented the state’s envoy. In his opening remarks, he praised the initiative, noting the peculiar geographical challenges of Bayelsa, describing it as “more of a delta than Delta State and more riverine than Rivers State.” He highlighted the inaccessibility of many parts of the state and expressed optimism that the new partnership would bridge the energy access gap.

Mr. Abba Aliyu, MD/CEO of REA, lauded the presence of the Executive Governor and his council, acknowledging their commitment to power development despite the short notice. Referencing the line “Let there be light” from the Bayelsa State anthem, he assured that REA’s mission aligns with the aspirations of Bayelsans. He revealed that REA is currently working on electrifying the Federal Medical Centre and Federal University Otuoke, projects set to be completed within six months.

Highlighting research findings, Mr. Aliyu mentioned that 119 communities in Bayelsa remain off-grid, with 147 health facilities in need of power interventions. He emphasized REA’s commitment to deploying its array of partners and experts to address these gaps. The REA executive team was introduced and outlined their specific contributions to enhancing power generation and transmission in the state.

In response, Mr. Olice Kemenanabo, Managing Director of the Bayelsa State Electricity Company Limited, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. He reiterated that the Assured Prosperity administration regards power as a critical element in delivering the dividends of democracy.

He highlighted the state’s power-related challenges, including infrastructure vandalism and high costs from current distributors. Mr. Kemenanabo stressed the need for a unified and efficient generation system, appealing for REA and its partners not to classify any region in Bayelsa as urban or rural due to the widespread transmission challenges.

The highlight of the event was a keynote address by His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, Executive Governor of Bayelsa State. The governor reaffirmed the importance of power in the state’s development agenda, citing energy and transportation as pillars of economic growth. He pointed to major road projects such as the Brass-Nembe road, Ekeremor road, and other Southern Ijaw connections as examples of efforts to open up the state.

Governor Diri noted, “Studies have shown that a 1% increase in energy production and consumption can yield a 0.5% to 1% rise in GDP, especially in underserved areas.” He emphasized the need for integrated energy solutions tailored to Bayelsa’s landscape, including hydropower and gas turbine systems, leveraging the state’s vast natural gas reserves.

He proudly announced the development of a 60,000-megawatt turbine system aimed at delivering 24-hour electricity to Yenagoa and its environs, projected to be operational by year-end. The governor urged REA and partners to always liaise with the Ministry of Power and state authorities to ensure project alignment and avoid duplication.

In his closing appeal, Governor Diri encouraged the REA to maximize its presence in the state, pledging support and revealing that young Bayelsans are being trained in technical skills to contribute meaningfully to the energy sector and address unemployment.

The event concluded with the official signing of the MOU between the REA and the Bayelsa State Government, represented by Hon. Engr. Kharin Komuko, Commissioner for Power.

Other dignitaries in attendance included Mr. Iroro Komonibo, Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Prof. Beke Sese, Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources Barr. Perepuighe Biewari, Commissioner of Lands and Survey, Biriyai Dambo (SAN), Attorney General & Commissioner for Justice Mazi Onuma Johnson, Commissioner for Special Duties (General Services) as the engagement marks a transformative step in Bayelsa’s energy sector and a reaffirmation of the administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and prosperity through sustainable electrification.
